Metronidazole For Dogs UTI (Urinary Tract Infection)

 In the following article, I would discuss the antibiotic, metronidazole for dogs UTI treatment. Many people are still confused about the usage of metronidazole in dogs urinary tract infection. So, I decided to explain all the pros and cons of metronidazole medication for dogs.

Bacteria enters in the body of your pet from urinary opening and wait for debris and waste for multiplication and growth. Bacteria (most commonly E Coli bacterium) found in the urinary tract multiply, grow faster and at the end cause infection.

Your pet veterinary doctor may suggest a metronidazole dosage for your puppy after seeing the condition. An Intravenous single dose of 15mg/kilogram weight is suggested dosage. Follow up 7.5mg/kg Oral dose (in the form of suspension) for 6 to 10 days.

For a female dog, Metronidazole Gel with applicators is also available in pharmacies. This type of dosage form is more suitable.

Metronidazole for Dogs UTI Side Effects

Although, this is the most tolerated drug. But in some cases, adverse reactions may occur. Immediately stop using Flagyl if you're seeing the following side effects;
  • red skin rashes on the body
  • mouth ulcer
  • vomiting
  • nausea
  • diarrhea
  • change in behavior (metronidazole may affect your dog nervous system, in very rare cases)

 It is highly contraindicated drug for your pet if your pet has a history of these kinds of diseases;
  • abdominal pain
  • intestinal diseases (typhoid etc)
  • nervous system disorders or mood swings
  • diarrhea
  • upset stomach
  • vision problems
  • liver damage or liver disorder
  • kidney problems like kidney stone etc
  • allergy from metronidazole or any of its component

How long should metronidazole for dogs UTI use?

The exact time period for using Flagyl antibiotic drugs may vary depending upon the severity of the infection. Your veterinary doctor may suggest any kind of metronidazole dosage form for your pet like I.V (Intravenous), Oral (suspension), Topical (gel), Vaginal (for female), etc.

For severe infection, Intravenous dose is more suitable. High doses should be avoided, because high doses of metronidazole medication may result in some serious problems like cancer, tumors, etc (supported by recent animal study).

Metronidazole antibiotic drug is good for treating your dog urinary tract infection as it stops the multiplication and growth of bacterium (single bacteria) in the urinary tract.
